Guides for song shares and beat licenses

These guides explain split sheets, songwriter shares, beat leases, and copyright registration in plain language. They point to the Copyright Office when a rule matters, and they are not legal advice or a promise of any royalty payment.

If you are looking for a split sheet download, start with the basics below and use the free template when you are ready. The links also cover royalty terms, beat licenses, and the difference between a split sheet and copyright registration.

Start here

A split sheet is a simple record of who wrote a song and how the writing is divided. If you want a starting point, use the free split sheet template and read what a split sheet is before you fill it out.

Royalties without a payment promise

Royalties can be discussed in different ways depending on the money source and who is owed payment. Our guide to music royalties explains the terms in plain language, but it does not promise that any payment will happen.

Beats

Beat leases and exclusive licenses are not the same thing, and the paperwork should match the deal. A lease does not automatically change who owns copyright, and copyright in an original work exists automatically once it is fixed in a tangible medium, as the Copyright Office explains.

Registration

Use a checklist when you are getting ready to register, but do not treat registration as the same thing as a split sheet. Registration is not mandatory, and you can read more in copyright registration if you want the steps and context.
