Splitline is building a split sheet app for indie songwriters and producers who want a simple place to note who wrote what, what was agreed, and what still needs follow up. It is not a copyright filing service or a rights clearance service.
What you can write down
You can save writer names, the shares you agreed, and notes about a beat license, then export a PDF for your own records. See the features page for a closer look, or start from a split sheet template.
- Writer names and shares
- Beat license notes
- A PDF export
What a split sheet is
A split sheet is a private note of who contributed to a song and how the shares were agreed. Under US copyright law, a joint work is a work prepared by two or more authors who intend their contributions to be merged into inseparable or interdependent parts of one work, and the authors of a joint work are coowners of the copyright in that work. The statute does not set a percentage split.
- A private note of shares
- Not a copyright registration
What the app does not do
Splitline is not a music lawyer, and it does not clear a beat or pay royalties. Copyright can exist automatically when an original work is fixed in a tangible medium, and registration is not mandatory. For more background, visit the guides page.
- Not a music lawyer
- Does not clear a beat
- Does not pay royalties
Guides and free tools
Use the guides and free tools to get organized before you send a split sheet or talk through a beat license. You can also use the fill in template and the beat license checklist to keep your notes in one place.
